Fun, fast, efficient, and delicious. I’ve seen the sushi promise land and the world will never be the same.
While in Japan we had the chance to visit two different conveyor belt sushi restaurants. One in Tokyo and one in Kyoto. We had never been to one before so the concept was a little weird at first. The restaurants had one central area where the sushi was prepared which was surrounded by bar seating. Only around 20-25 people fit at the bar so you usually have to wait for a seat to open up. People don’t stay very long so the wait was never bad.
Once you are seated, you’ll see a magnificent conveyor belt of endless magical sushi parading right in front of your face. All you have to do is reach out and grab it! It’s amazing! It took some serious sell control not to grab every plate that went by.
Each plate has 1-4 pieces of sushi and have couple different levels of cost. It was all very affordable and made fresh right in front of you. You can also request specialty pieces directly from the chef. Some of our favorite pieces were the fatty tuna, scallop, and salmon nigiri. The most interesting piece was the sea urchin. It tasted like you licking a barnacle covered pier. Despite this it was still oddly tasty.
When you’re done and waiter will count up the number of small plates you have and use that number to determine what you will pay. It’s that simple.
